Self care doesn’t have to be a luxury reserved for those with extra square footage.

Sometimes, we might think that we have to forego certain luxuries because we don’t have a lot of space.

But anyone can create a dedicated cozy spot in their home for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Corners are great because every room has one…usually four 😉.

You may not have space for a dedicated room for a she-shed, woman cave, man cave, home library, or wellness room.

But every room has a corner.

And I think every home should have a rest corner.

If you are intentional with that space, you can make it feel like a completely different room that serves as a place to spark joy and invite peace.

Here’s how…

9 Cozy And Calming Rest Corner Ideas For Any Small Space, home decor ideas

Uses For A Rest Corner

There are two different types of rest: active or passive.

How you create your rest corner will be determined by what category of rest you want to use it for.

Active rest would involve doing a calming activity outside of work, not tied to money or performance metrics, that is done for enjoyment and relaxation.

If you want to use a rest corner for more active rest, you could use it for things like:

Reading – You could create a reading nook.

Meditation – You could create a meditation station.

Journaling – You could curl up with your journal and have a dedicated space to write in your journal or answer journal prompts.

Hobbies – You could create a hobby nook for something like knitting, crocheting, etc.

If you want to use a rest corner for more passive rest, you could use it for things like:

Napping – You could just take a good old fashioned nap.

Don’t feel tied to just one of these ideas.

You can also have a multi-purpose rest corner that serves as a place to read, write, meditate, tinker, and sleep.

Rest Corner Essentials

Here are some must haves for every calming corner + some design inspo:

Seating

For maximum versatility, use seating that is just the right size and structure where it allows you to comfortably sit up if you choose to, and also comfortably curl up or lie down if you want to.

Seating can be many different types:

  • Bean bag
  • Hammock
  • Floor cushion
  • Hanging chair
  • Human dog bed
  • Papasan circle chair
  • Arm chair and ottoman
  • Corner piece of a sectional sofa

Lighting

Instead of relying on the regular old overhead light in your room, make your rest corner feel like a completely different space by giving it its own lighting concept.

Think special standing lamp, table lamp, led lighting, or string lights.

Surface

You’ll need a surface to place a book, a journal, a snack, a drink, whatever you use while in that space.

Storage

If you’re using your calming corner a lot for reading or hobbies, you may also want a small storage piece like floating shelves, a compact bookshelf, an end table, or a storage ottoman.

Cozy Blanket

There are many different kinds of blankets of various thicknesses, textures, and weights, but this is a must not just for the look, but also for the feel.

Drape your blanket over your seating to make it look inviting when you’re not there, and drape your blanket around yourself when you’re in your calming corner to make it comfy when you are there.

Pillows

Another must for both comfort and aesthetics.

Oversized pillows are ideal for support, and smaller pillows are ideal as decorative accents.

Use one or the other, or a mix of both.

Rug

A rug helps differentiate the space from the rest of the room.

Plus, a fuzzy rug adds to the cozy vibe by inviting you to be barefoot and tapping into your sense of touch.

Personality

This is the part where you add your decor pieces to inject your space with a look and feel in line with your personal style.

Pictures on the wall, or the look and design of the furniture pieces and accessories you choose will contribute to this sense of personality.

Vibe

Think of all five of your senses:

Sight – make it beautiful and aesthetic

Smell – incorporate diffusers, incense, candles

Touch – incorporate items that feel good on your skin

Sound – try an aesthetic speaker or record player for music

Taste – you may have a favorite tea or beverage you like to drink while in your rest corner

Final Thoughts

There ya have it!

Hopefully, this inspires you to create a cozy calming corner in your home.

And hopefully, you now have a good jumping off point for your design inspiration.
